Week 1                                                                                                                                Stay Awake

For a child has been born for us,
a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders;
and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
His authority shall grow continually,
and there shall be endless peace
for the throne of David and his kingdom.
He will establish and uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time onward and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

–Isaiah 9:6-7

Quiet Certainty

I would see it with such certainty,
and I yearn to see the mystery,
present each day in my life.
When there is endless peace, I will rejoice
in that place,
and I find it in my spirit,
deep within me,
certainty.
And I hear the words, past and future,
“and suddenly,” and
“a child has been born for us,”
and Joy fills the air around me,
and salvation is around me.
Joy in the Word!
Joy to the World!
His authority is around us.

“Not everyone can wait: neither the sated nor the satisfied nor those without respect can wait. The only ones who can wait are people who carry restlessness around with them.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, God Is in the Manger: Reflections on Advent and Christmas

Devotions to Our God in the Manger 2014: In This tent

A D V E N T   2 0 1 4:   D E V O T I O N S   T O   O U R   G O D   I N   T H E   M A N G E R

Jesus

Week 1                                                                                       Stay Awake

       In This Tent

Even after this time,
When my tent is shreds here,
I know His presence will be my present.
I know the place of my spirit.
I dream of the place,
the royal place,
the new mansion I have dreamed about,
this newest of homes.
Bright and warm beyond belief,
I believe,
and await.
Not the end,
But the beginning,
I dream of this place in the tent.
I know this place of my soul.

2 Corinthians 5:1                       (New International Version (NIV))

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

Devotions to Our God in the Manger 2014: A Knock

A D V E N T   2 0 1 4:   D E V O T I O N S   T O   O U R   G O D   I N   T H E   M A N G E R

Jesus

Week 1                                                                                               Stay Awake

                             A Knock

This week, I too have heard Jesus at the door,
knocking,
and the vibrations have tingled often in my chest,
and I have been aware, awake,
and I come to the door alive.
Whom do I see?
My neighbor is there, seeking missing mail;
lonely?
Urban camper friends come, seeking
bus passes and warmth;
cold and lonely?
A young boy comes a calling,
seeking a small job to earn some bread;
ragged and lonely?
Christ is alive in my community,
as He was in Christmas past.
Christ is alive and He knocks on my door.
I am anxious now for a final Advent,
for all things new, but today He lives at my door.

2014 Devotions to Our God in the Manger: Hard Waiting

A D V E N T 2 0 1 4:    D E V O T I O N S   T O   O U R   G O D   I N   T H E   M A N G E R

Jesus

Week 1       Stay Awake

                            Hard Waiting

I want to crack open the best fruit today,
but the new shoot on which it will perch has just started up.
As before, I am seeking wisdom, knowledge;
as a boy, I seek a mighty counselor,
Abba, strong and sure.
Impatiently, I wait.
I see the green fruit, ripe and luscious,
and I am almost deceived,
disappointed, alone.
I do not do well to do without,
but I know to wait now.
My questions are deep, barely-formed,
and I am anxious anew.
I seek new rooms, new places,
new relationship,
and I wait.
Anxiously, I seek to crack open new fruit.
My Christmas stocking is there, still empty.

The Sweet Word

Continuing my repeat of On Word, Law and Life.

Ask, Seek, Knock

Oh How Sweet This Word To Me

Oh, yes, I love what you teach me,
outwardly and inwardly in my thoughts and soul all day,
when my mind is open daily (sometimes not).
Outwardly you make me seem wiser than I was,
than I am, because your commandments are
on my face, on my tongue.
Obvious at times, I may be wiser than I should be,
Obtaining new wisdom when your words fill my thoughts;
Obedient to the words you drive into me, I
obtain wisdom beyond my years–and in spite of my years.
Oh how bright is your path, not the gloomy evil path, but
Ordered and bright, your path is the one I obey.
Obedient to your word, joyful in the word. Blessed!
You have taught me well these days.
Oh how sweet your word to me–
oh how sweet this treat!
On to understanding, I plod after your word–
Oh how bright this path that drives away from lies.

Thanksgiving Memories

Thanksgiving greetings to my friends!

For Thanksgiving, I am repeating the liturgy from our Disciple Bible Class for all my friends.

Disciples Act

Disciples place themselves under the power and authority of Scripture–
–Free in the Word!

Disciples know that they belong to God, that God has claim on them–
–We act on our discipleship with Jesus, eternal Word!

Disciples acknowledge their rebelliousness, and repent–
–We turn away, sometimes many times.

Disciples respond to God’s call, enter the covenant community, express committment–
–called and shaped, sometimes many times!

Disciples hear and obey God’s call to be bearers of God’s message of deliverance–
–Listen to our cries for help. Hard to miss our calls!

Disciples keep God’s Law by doing it–
–Keep us obedient that we might find happiness in the commands.

Disciples commit to corporate worship–
–Offerings and thanksgiving, help us pass through our guilt and shame.

Disciples are Godly leaders–
–Keep Nathans in our lives. Sometimes we hate Prophet Nathans.

Disciples respect and support Godly leaders but give true allegiance only to God–
–God, bless our actions and keep us right.

Disciples listen to prophetic voices for our communities, nations, and world–
–Holy One, open our ears.

Disciples accept consequences of our sins, seek forgiveness–
–Creator, heal us, and offer us new opportunities for faithfulness–even when we fail.

Disciples choose to serve and not to despair–
–In our sinful despair, teach us to pick up the towel and wash feet.

Disciples trust God with all their thoughts and feelings–
–God, do be in us. Joyful!

Disciples strive to live in harmony with God’s laws, even when it is costly–
–Make us servants of the Word!

Disciples trust God in the face of unexplained suffering–
–Keep our focus upward. Heal us, as we minister.

Disciples live in hope, with a vision of God’s kingdom–
–We are God’s people!

Disciples hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ in harmony with the historic people of God–
–We yearn to be with our God, held by God.

Disciples accept Christ’s call to radical discipleship–
–joyful to be radical again, show us Christ’s way.

Disciples enter the ministry of making disciples–
–Keep us vulnerable, lead us from our pretenses.

Disciples understand our ministry as a call to self-denial and suffering–
–My suffering is not FOR me.

Disciples are in mission with the least, the last and the lost–
–Keep us walking WITH those we serve.

Disciples experience life in Jesus Christ–
–Lord, I am at peace, in joy, beyond meaninglessness. I know I have purpose.

Disciples experience the inner assurance of abundant, eternal life–
–It is personal in this relationship. Eternal life!

Disciples experience the Holy Spirit–
–So much life, gifts to each of us!

Disciples witness to others in order to lead them to Christ–
–Let my whole life be real witness, a Psalm of the Gospel!

Disciples receive and accept the forgiving Love of God in Jesus Christ, and serve out of love and gratitude–
–Trust and grace in our lives today!

Disciples love–
–Simply difficult! Just do it?

Disciples experience and express freedom as loving God and loving neighbor–
–Freedom again! Keep us free!

Disciples seek sound teaching–
–Train us each day, even when we are too bold to know we are off-track.

Disciples accept God’s forgiveness–
–as hard as we try to forgive ourselves, we feel God’s grace as we serve.

Disciples know themselves as distinctive, peculiar people bearing the mark of Jesus–
–Mark our character deeply, our outward selves marked with compassion–
–Keep us Holy!

Disciples remain faithful to God in the midst of persecution and suffering–
–Holy One, strengthen my faith as I lose my temper around suffering souls.

Disciples exercise their gifts in ministry to others–
–Direct our eyes and our souls outwardly each day!

Disciples commit their lives completely to God to serve as God wills–
–Keep our memory vital!

For me it is right to conclude with John Wesley’s Covenant Prayer:

I am no longer my own, but yours.
Put met to what you will, rank me with whom you will;
put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be employed by you or laid aside by you,
enabled for you or brought low by you.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and heartily yield all things
to your pleasure and disposal.
And now, O glorious and blessed God,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
you are mine, and I am yours. So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on earth,
let it be ratified in heaven.
Amen.

Thanksgiving Blessings to all who have come here today!
